A probiotic is a live bacterium or yeast that thrives in integral systems of the body like the digestive system. It is a misnomer to consider all forms of bacteria as harmful. In a human body, both the good and bad forms of bacteria thrive and the probiotic ones are the best example of the good bacteria. Their primary work is to keep the gut healthy and this nature of this supplement acts as a good application in the medicine industry; like doctors suggesting for probiotic supplements in case of problems like stomach ache and other digestive related disorders.

The Working Method

Researchers have found results stating that gut health is linked to the nervous and immune systems of the body and hence their optimal health is very important from health point of view. This is where the probiotics come into picture as they replace the good bacteria that get killed unnecessarily during any course of antibiotic, help in easy digestion of food and improving the quality of lifestyle led by a person.

Different Strains of Probiotics

All the thousands of probiotics are divided into two major strains of bacteria: –

  • Lactobacillus- Found in curd, cheese and a majority of dairy products, it is the most common strain of probiotic found inside the body. It is the main agent that converts the lactose present in the milk into lactic acid that forms the curd. It generally helps patients suffering from lactose intolerance and digestive issues like typhoid and diarrhoea.

  • Bifidobacterium- It is the second major strain of probiotic bacteria. It helps mainly in improving the bowel movements of a person and deals with all forms of bowel irregularities like loose motions or constipation. It is also found in dairy products.

The probiotics benefits

The probiotics generally perform the following functions that are also the probiotic benefits:

  • It is the driving force for maintaining the health of the human gut and hence indirectly also affects the working of nervous and immune systems in a positive manner.

  • It is helpful in treating some of the common forms of digestive system related problems like indigestion, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and diarrhoea.

  • Research has also shown probiotics to be effective in treating skin diseases like eczema, urinary problems, common cold and allergies and oral disorders.

Who might not be best to use probiotics

Although probiotics have majorly positive and helpful effects, but still there are a few people who risk side effects like:

  • They may produce adverse effects in infants and people suffering from serious cardiovascular diseases.

  • Consumption of probiotics by children of low immune system may cause a fatal disease of the blood named bacteraemia

FDA Approved

The FDA has nearly approved all forms of probiotics supplements and dietary foods rich in them. Even though probiotics are good for health, it is highly recommended to take them after consulting any qualified physician and in cases of any inflammatory reactions they must be immediately discontinued.
